As part of The Pansy Project Paul Harfleet has been involved in many festivals and exhibitions, consisting of a variety of strands of activity allowing The Pansy Project to be seen in many contexts Including large scale 'installations' of often thousands of pansies at the site of homophobic abuse. The above image depicts the first installation of two thousand pansies placed outside Manchester Gallery as part of Queer up North International Arts Festival 2005.
The above image shows a 'Pansy Giveaway' which was part of Harfleet's involvement with the 2007 BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. For these 'Giveaways' pansies are given out to members of the public for free with information about The Pansy Project, this enables the artist to engage with the public and discuss the issues of homophobia with a wider audience. Three thousand pansies where also planted along the Southbank to mark the death of David Morley who was the victim of what was widely believed to be a homophobically motivated murder. The pansies delineated the British Film Institute's exterior and decorated various street furniture and flower beds until they reached the location of the incident at the Hungerford Bridge, show in the image below.
Alongside these activities the artist also exhibits the photographs; each picture is augmented with hand written titles, the juxtaposition of the often attractive pictures of pansies with the offensive comments creates a harrowing series of images which have been included in galleries in Manchester, Berlin, London and in Iceland in 2008 as part of the Reykjavik Arts Festival which the below image depicts.
